When it comes to applying for college after high school, student tend to make common simple mistakes that lead to their applications being overlooked. Don't get into the same shoe but avoid common mistakes made by overlooking simple thing. Here are few things to account for before and when applying for university or college.
1. Make a decision
You must be decisive and already have in mind your preferred courses of studies in order of preference. This is an indication of preparedness and having direction in your life that guides you to making an assertive decision on your the preferences available.Your should already have your choice in mind.
2. Desktop Study/Research
Before even applying for a course to study in the university, you should already have a background understanding of the courses. Background research of the institution and the programs offered is the key. Research, career opportunities, challenges, benefits, disadvantages, entry requirements and prerequisites, institutional repetitions, research activities and so fort. It give you knowledge to analyze from available options of institutions and courses/programs offered and thus places you in a better position to make sound decision.
3. Consider Entry Requirements and Prerequisites
The most important element to consider when applying for colleges or universities is to determine the minimum entry requirements and perquisites. Knowing the entry requirements and prerequisites gives you the chance assess yourself in terms of your strength and weaknesses. It is an opportunity to rank yourself against with reference to the entry requirements and be sure of your current position and the possibilities of success. Entry requirements is very crucial and must be accounted irrespective of inner desires overcoming common sense and sound reasoning abilities. In most cases students personal desires are so overwhelming that they apply for the wrong courses. Be assertive and be a pro judge yourself before making the final choice.
4. Know your Capabilities and Passion
Know your capabilities, limitations and passion. Making your passion into career is very rewarding. You must be able to understand yourself better, no one knows you better that yourself. Note your capabilities, what you're good at, what interests you, your strengths, your weaknesses, your passion. Go for things that you're passionate about because you will love it because you will find joy in your passion. Choosing something outside your passion is weakening and defeating.
5. Mental Clarity
The mind is a very powerful tool and it must not be clouded with so many unnecessary issues and agendas. It must be free of stresses and relaxed and free to make such important decision in your life. This allows the mind to freely explore opportunities and options, consider all possibilities and returning a good match.
6. Self confidence
Must be confident and believe in yourself. You must be sure of yourself and have some faith in yourself in terms of your potentials. "A bird sitting on a tree never afraid of the branch breaking because her trust is not on the branch but, in her wings". Believe in yourself.
7. High to Low Trend
Most institutions offer two or three preferences to choose from the order of preference. Make use of the preferences wisely. Fill in preferences in order of descending minimum entry requirements. For example A Grade course as your first, followed by a B Grade course by a C Grade course. this gives you a chance to be considered for any one of the choices. If you miss out on the first, you still have an equal chance to be considered for the second or the third.
8. Enter Correct details
Finally its very common to make silly mistakes. Avoid making common mistakes, proof read the final application several time and be 100% sure of no spelling errors. Make sure the fonts and letters are readable and clear to the reader/selector.
